A CO-DEVELOPPEMENT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN JC PERAUD & B'TWIN
2016, April 14th
- "B'TWIN's goal has always been to get as many people into cycling as possible. But this ambition is by no means a barrier to offering products of a more technical nature. The B'TWIN teams have taken on a unique challenge: to offer pro-level cycling shoes at an affordable price. To achieve this, the brand has surrounded itself with the best names in cycling.
TWO PARTNERS OF CHOICE
- Jean-Christophe Peraud: Runner-up in the 2014 Tour de France and Silver Medal Cross Country Olympian. Here's a pro who knows his stuff.
- Nans Peters: after 3 years with the B’TWIN U19 Racing Team, Nans is now a reserve in the AG2R la Mondiale pro team (he will gain a place in the first team in 2017). In 2008 he became part of the B'TWIN U19 Racing Team project, and has since been involved in cycling shoe development.
This is a great opportunity for B'TWIN to work alongside these champions as they put their experience at the service of the customer."
- STAGE BY STAGE DESIGN
Two years is the time it takes to develop a road cycling shoe. The first, essential design stage involves observing cyclists and reviewing the way customers use the product. Then it's up to the designers, product engineers and component engineers to develop a product best suited to the needs of cyclists.
Different prototypes are tested by our technical partners
"Collaborating with pro cyclists is a real advantage because they are extremely demanding users. A pro cyclist covers around 30 to 40,000 km per year, making it easier to quickly pick up on any defects. These strict requirements, combined with a cost-management focused design allows us to develop technical products at unbeatable value for money on today's market." Explains Eric Bastin, Shoe Product Manager at B'TWIN.
- THE HIGH-TECH 700 AEROFIT CYCLING SHOE, DESIGNED IN COLLABORATION WITH JC PERAUD
This new shoe features a thicker sole, combining carbon and composite fibres to increase comfort. Whilst this combination makes the sole slightly heavier than a 100% carbon sole of around 20 g (the total weight of the shoe is 280 g in size 9), it also increases resistance, making the shoe last longer. This has all been achieved without having to reduce the rigidity. Blind tests revealed that even the technical partners couldn't tell the difference between this mixture of soles and normal 100% carbon soles. The upper shoe is composed of 3 layers, providing great resistance to stretching. This prevents the shoe from being too flexible. As for the fastening, the design teams opted for the lighter and more precise ATOP reel knob lacing system, which allows the wearer to find the optimal tightness for better support, thanks to the Velcro strap on the forefoot. Air holes at the front of the foot provide great ventilation, keeping the feet cool and ensuring the wearer stays comfortable in high temperatures. This model, co-developed and worn by Jean-Christophe Péraud, is available in black & white. An identical limited series in the same colours worn by our technical partners will also be exclusively available online at some point in 2016. This will be the B'TWIN RACING TEAM version: the left shoe will be pink, the right shoe, blue.
